NYSERDA and LED Specialists Announce Research Underway on Low-Glare, Low-Heat OLED Lighting Accessory Technology
The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and LED Specialists announced that LED Specialists will perform research and develop components that will make it easier for Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) technology to be incorporated into lighting fixtures. OLED lights provide low glare, are energy efficient and produce little to no heat. The new components will act as building blocks to simplify the creation of lighting fixture products for a range of lighting applications.
The project, which is expected to create up to 10 new jobs, advances Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) strategy to build a clean, resilient and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers by accelerating the pace of energy innovation.
John B. Rhodes, President and CEO, NYSERDA, said, "This project is the latest example of State investment in innovative energy research under Governor Cuomo's leadership. This project continues to advance the development of energy-efficient, building-related technologies that use less energy and provide energy-saving choices to consumers."
NYSERDA's technology and business innovation initiative supports a vibrant, self-sustaining clean energy technology innovation environment to accelerate the growth and scale of businesses that serve the clean energy market in New York State and globally.
OLED's unique properties include very thin profile, light weight, homogeneous distributed light and light-emitting surface shaping. The technology could first be seen in the aviation, marine, and automotive industries before being used in mainstream markets such as commercial and residential buildings.
This project will develop mechanical components (for support, connection and mounting of OLED panels) and electrical components (drive electronics, dimming controls and electrical connectivity) to enable lighting fixture manufacturers to readily use OLED panels in the design and fabrication of innovative lighting fixtures. These accessory components will be used in ceiling or wall mount lighting panels, and integrated into glass shelving, furniture, and pendant designs as well as other applications in office, marine, aviation, medical and retail environments.
The development efforts of this early-stage technology are expected to result in increased usage of OLED panel technology in lighting applications and realize associated energy savings benefits.
"We believe OLED technology has tremendous promise in a wide range of specialized lighting applications that will improve living and working environments and task performance while saving energy," said Bill Reisenauer, co-founder of LED Specialists. "NYSERDA's support allows LED Specialists to engage in this development activity."
