Top FERC Enforcement Lawyer Jeremy Medovoy Joins McGuireWoods

McGuireWoods is building on its powerful energy enforcement capabilities with the arrival of partner Jeremy Medovoy, the former Deputy Director of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s Office of Enforcement and the agency’s top-ranking enforcement lawyer.

He is the 10th partner to join McGuireWoods’ D.C. office since July 2024.

Medovoy advises clients on matters before FERC, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), drawing on insights he gained during his 16-year career at FERC.

Medovoy led all aspects of the agency’s enforcement program, including investigations, litigation, audits and market surveillance, working closely with other federal agencies and industry stakeholders. Before his appointment as deputy director, he held multiple leadership roles in the Office of Enforcement and was instrumental in shaping policy and leading high-profile matters that influenced the regulatory landscape.

“Jeremy served with distinction at FERC through multiple changes in administrations,” said Noreen Kelly, McGuireWoods’ deputy managing partner for litigation. “He has an insider’s perspective on the agency’s priorities and investigative practices, and his unique insight will help clients develop effective compliance programs and mitigate risk.”

Todd Mullins, co-leader of McGuireWoods’ energy regulatory and enforcement practice group, said: “Jeremy played leading roles in many high-profile cases and policy initiatives at FERC and earned the respect of lawyers in the energy bar. His skill crafting creative solutions to complex problems will benefit our clients immensely.”

Medovoy’s arrival follows the recent return of D.C. partner David Martin Connelly, a nationally recognized energy regulatory lawyer who advises electric utilities and their affiliates on matters before FERC and federal appeals courts.

“McGuireWoods has a top-tier energy practice with respected practitioners who know the market and excel at helping clients navigate a complicated regulatory landscape,” Medovoy said. “I am excited to work with these outstanding lawyers to help our clients achieve their business goals.”

McGuireWoods’ multidisciplinary energy industry team brings together legal, policy, energy technology and business experience to provide integrated services to clients across sectors. The firm’s regulatory and compliance lawyers represent clients in proceedings before FERC, the Environmental Protection Agency, state public utility commissions and state agencies. McGuireWoods earned nationwide rankings for energy regulatory, litigation and transactional work in the 2024 editions of The Legal 500 United States and Chambers USA.

Medovoy, the 10th partner to join McGuireWoods’ D.C. office since July 2024, continues an expansion that strengthened the firm’s capabilities in practices including antitrustcommercial litigationenergy regulation and enforcementgovernment investigations and white collar litigationhealthcare; and securities enforcement and regulatory counseling.
