New Report from Sinovoltaics and volytica diagnostics Shows Improved BESS Testing Could Prevent Up to $2.3 Billion in Revenue and O&M Losses

Sinovoltaics, in collaboration with volytica diagnostics, has released a comprehensive white paper detailing the critical advantages of their BESSential 100% battery pack testing service over traditional Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) methods. The white paper, featuring an in-depth case study, illustrates how BESSential's enhanced testing and diagnostics can prevent significant financial losses and optimize system performance for Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.

Titled "Modernizing Traditional BESS Factory Acceptance Testing with Advanced Battery Diagnostics" the white paper presents a case study of a 50 MWh energy storage project in Europe, where traditional FAT and SAT methods failed to detect severe thermal imbalances and voltage variations within the BESS. If left unresolved, the issues could have resulted in over $600,000 in financial losses due to accelerated battery degradation and system downtime. Since traditional quality assurance methods use sampling instead of testing every BESS container and battery pack, the financial cost could have been multiplied.

The BESSential service, which includes 100% battery pack analytics, identified critical defects at the factory, ensuring that a defect-free BESS was delivered to the client, avoiding project completion delays and future revenue losses. When similar defects are projected across the estimated global deployments through 2030, BESS project developers could collectively incur $2.3 billion in preventable revenue and O&M losses through 2030.

Unlike traditional FAT and SAT, which rely on limited testing, BESSential offers a comprehensive and data-driven approach to revealing defects at the factory. The white paper’s findings underscore the importance of adopting advanced diagnostic tools like BESSential to avoid costly delays, minimize warranty claims, and maximize return on investment. As illustrated, preemptively identifying and rectifying potential failures can protect developers from financial loss and ensure that BESS projects are operationally efficient from the start.

"The findings presented in this white paper highlight the critical need for 100% battery pack analytics, ensuring that every pack is analyzed, not just a sample,” said Arthur Claire, Sinovoltaics’ Director of Technology and co-author of the white paper. “This approach not only prevents costly failures but also maximizes the efficiency and lifespan of energy storage systems, making it an essential risk reduction and quality control service for renewable energy asset owners and developers."

“Our collaboration with Sinovoltaics is setting a new standard for reliability and quality assurance in the energy storage industry. By analyzing data from routine load tests, volytica diagnostics’ algorithms provide an unprecedented level of detail with no additional testing effort,” said Lutz Morawietz, Head of Algorithm Development, volytica diagnostics. “Our tools not only identify issues like faulty cooling systems and wiring, onset of corrosion, early signs of cell failure, and capacity variability that should be addressed before the BESS leaves the OEM, but also highlight the importance of continuous monitoring throughout the assets' operational life.”
