New State Grant Program Helps More Marylanders Plug Into Electric Vehicles’ Low Operating and Maintenance Costs

The Maryland Energy Administration (MEA) announced the launch of an important new effort to expand the number of electric vehicle (EV) chargers at apartment buildings and in often-overlooked communities statewide.

This initiative, the Community Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Grant Program, aims to help bring the reduced fuel and maintenance costs of EV ownership to far more Marylanders by putting chargers in places convenient to where they live. As prices come down on a number of EV models, more people at various income levels can better afford them. That’s why MEA is working to ensure reliable vehicle charging opportunities are available nearby.

The Maryland Energy Administration is offering up to $10 million in Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) funding to state and local governments, non-profit organizations, and companies to install electric vehicle chargers in multi-family and community-serving buildings, helping to accelerate the adoption of cleaner transportation solutions in under-resourced communities in Maryland.

This program is being offered as a result of Governor Moore’s commitment to invest $23 million in electric vehicle charging infrastructure in low- and moderate income, historically overburdened and underserved communities in Maryland.

“The Moore administration places a priority on making affordable clean energy within reach for all Marylanders. By expanding the state's EV charging network, those who live in multi-family housing situations or long-overlooked neighborhoods can also plug into the reduced operating and maintenance costs that come with driving an EV,”  said Maryland Energy Administration Director Paul G. Pinsky. “The new program also creates another way for the state to reduce transportation greenhouse gas emissions across the state, improving everyone’s air quality.”

A detailed Program Overview and Funding Opportunity Announcement documents, along with more information regarding applicant eligibility, project requirements, incentive amounts, and evaluation criteria, are available on the program’s webpage

The agency will accept applications for the FY25 Community Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Grant Program on a rolling, first-come, first-served basis until Friday March 28, 2025, at 5:00 PM Eastern Time, or until all program funding has been awarded, whichever occurs first.
