DOE Intends to Fund $20M for Solar Module and Hardware RD&D

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) announced its intent to issue the Solar Module and Solar Hardware (SMASH) Incubator notice of funding opportunity (NOFO). This potential funding opportunity will award up to $20 million for research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) projects that advance solar photovoltaic (PV) modules and other hardware technologies.

This potential funding opportunity will encourage innovations in PV manufacturing across the supply chain, with the aim of reducing U.S. reliance on imported materials and technologies.

DOE expects to release the NOFO in November 2024. SETO is interested in funding projects in three topic areas:

  • Topic Area 1: Crystalline Silicon Modules
  • Topic Area 2: Cadmium Telluride Modules
  • Topic Area 3: Non-Module Hardware
