LONGi Publishes 7th Sustainability Report

LONGi, a global leader in solar technology, published its 2023 Sustainability Report as part of its mission to make the best solar energy to build a green world. The report details specific actions and achievements by the company in the past year to reach its ESG goal of making clean energy affordable for all. As part of its core business, LONGi achieved 125.42 GW of PV silicon wafers shipments, reaching 414.24 GWs in cumulative shipments. By the end of 2023, LONGi manufactured 27% of the cumulative global installed PV capacity, equivalent to 1.7361 million GWh, cutting emission by 812 million tCO2e.

In 2023, LONGi prioritized building sustainable growth across the value chain by conducting key assessments of its suppliers and empowering upstream partners with best practices for sustainability, including carbon accounting and footprint reduction, and conflict minerals. As part of this initiative, in 2023, 100% of its new suppliers were screened with environmental and social standards and 100% of suppliers signed its integrity agreement.

Internally, LONGi also made important sustainability achievements through energy efficiency and management. In 2023, LONGi was recognized by the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) for its emission reduction targets, which align with the 1.5℃ target in the Paris Agreement. As part of its efforts to achieve these emissions reductions, LONGi reduced its annual electricity usage by more than 1,064 million kWh. This resulted in a 9.53% YoY decrease in the company’s overall power consumption and an 18.32% drop compared with the base year (2020). Further reducing its emissions, the company integrated clean energy and energy efficiency measures into its product manufacturing process. In 2023, 3.815 million MWh of LONGi’s total electricity consumption came from renewable energy, accounting for ~31.10% of the total electricity consumption, which is equivalent to about 2,124,399 tCO2e emissions reduction.

LONGi also assessed water risks for all its operating locations by conducting an annual inventory of water resources at all its factories based on the World Resources Institute (WRI) water risk atlas. In 2023, the company internally implemented 118 water-saving projects, saving 5.53 million tons of water. As a result, the company’s total water consumption decreased by 12.75% year-on-year, and by 33.52% from the base year.

In terms of innovation, LONGi increased R&D investment by 8% YoY in 2023 to US$1.088 billion, achieving an R&D revenue ratio of 5.96 %. This investment led to LONGi Silicon-perovskite cell efficiency setting a new world record of 33.9% in November of 2023, following the announcement of 31.8% in May and 33.5% in June. LONGi Solar Technology (Jiaxing) Co., Ltd. was recognized as a “Lighthouse Factory” by the World Economic Forum (WEF), becoming the first company to achieve this status in the global PV industry.

With outstanding eco-friendly features, several LONGi silicon wafer and module products received a total of 62 carbon footprint certifications from third-party institutions in France, South Korea and other countries. In terms of the full lifecycle of its products, LONGi obtained PV CYCLE’s LEED certification, verifying that all of LONGi’s PV products meet the 100% recyclable standard. This was achieved in part with LONGI’s development of fluoride-free solar backplanes, which eliminates the non-recyclable material.

LONGi’s commitment to ESG has been recognized by a number of third-party ESG rating organizations, such as MSCI, S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), Sustainalytics, LSEG Data & Analytics, Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs (IPE). In its 2023 disclosure of the Environmental Information Research Center (CDP), the world's largest and most authoritative environmental data disclosure platform, LONGi received a "B" grade in both climate change and water security performance, placing it at a leading level in the PV industry. LONGi was also awarded the Silver Sustainability Rating by EcoVadis, the international authoritative corporate social responsibility (CSR) assessment platform that covers topics, including environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.

LONGi’s sustainability report was prepared in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Standards (GRI Standards), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) Standards, IFRS S1 General Requirements for Disclosure of Sustainability-related Financial Information and IFRS S2 Climate-related Disclosures released by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB).
