James Fisher Brings Termination and Testing Expertise to Ørsted and Eversource’s South Fork Wind Project

James Fisher and Sons plc (James Fisher) continues to expand its renewables service offering in the US by overseeing critical testing and termination services at South Fork Wind offshore wind farm in Long Island, US, working with offshore wind leader Ørsted and their joint venture partner, Eversource.

As part of James Fisher Renewables’ commitment to delivering the energy transition and their continued expansion into the North American renewable energy market, a team of offshore wind specialists commenced client witness work at the site in August 2023. The project involves overseeing the testing and termination of export and inter-array cables and working as client representatives to ensure the cable termination at all 12 turbines and the substation is of high quality and complies with all relevant industry standards.

Resonance testing is in use at the site to detect and prevent installation errors, and James Fisher Renewables’ experience with this method will help ensure asset integrity.

The project has been welcomed by product line director at James Fisher Renewables, Maida Zahirovic:

“We are delighted to be a part of the South Fork Wind project. Our significant expertise in testing and terminations of the export and inter array cables makes us well placed to support this project. We look forward to working with all stakeholders to ensure the safety and quality of the installation.”

James Fisher Renewables’ team at South Fork Wind is backed by engineering staff with extensive experience, supporting more than 24GW of offshore wind capacity globally.

This is the second time this year that the James Fisher Renewables team has worked at the South Fork Wind offshore wind farm, as during the summer their big bubble curtain solution was utilised during the installation phase. Using new technology developed in-house, the big bubble curtain created a barrier surrounding the piling of the wind turbine foundations, attenuating noise by up to 90 percent and protecting marine wildlife.

South Fork Wind, the State of New York’s first offshore wind farm, will deliver enough energy to power 70,000 homes. Located 35 miles offshore to the east of Montauk Point on eastern tip of the south shore of Long Island, it comprises 12 turbines, generating 132MW to meet the energy needs of Long Island’s East Hampton area. The project is a joint venture of Ørsted and Eversource Energy.
